Things to do in Koloa

Koloa is located in Kauai, and is a historic and cultural hotspot of the Hawaiian islands. The first ever successfully run sugarcane plantation happened right here in 1835, and its ancient name has no known translation, but many myths and mysteries surround it.

For history buffs, Koloa is a goldmine. From the aforementioned Old Sugar Mill of Koloa, to Saint Raphael Catholic Church, the oldest Catholic church in Kauai, and Old Koloa Town, there are many spots to visit and learn about the area’s history.

A trip to Hawaii is incomplete, of course, without a stop in nature. Lawa’i Beach is a small stretch of sand with vibrant underwater life, perfect for snorkeling and other water sports. It also makes for a perfect setting to take a sunset walk. The Koloa Heritage Trail is another great place for a hike, with a bit of ancient Hawaiian history thrown in as well. The 10-mile hiking and biking trail on the south shore is a great level for families, so no need to worry about your athletic level. Be sure to check out the Spouting Horn Blowhole, a blowhole spouting water 50 feet into the air. Listen closely for the legendary roar. The Spouting Horn Blowhole can be seen on the Waimea Canyon, Kauai Half Day Eco Fun tour.
